The sci-fi genre is a prolific field of new ideas, where artists can venture to give free rein to their imaginations about what a future might look like that is no longer so far from reality. And while it’s increasingly difficult to be innovative, there are science fiction films that predicted modern technologies, which almost everyone now has at their fingertips.

An early adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s literary classic, F. Truffaut’s “Fahrenheit 451” was one of the pioneering science fiction films in predicting the future. If you look closely, you’ll notice several gadgets that you may take for granted in modern times, but there’s one in particular that stands out, wireless headphones, which are now used for many things, from making calls to listening to music.

Star Wars: A New Hope

Perhaps many of George Lucas’ technologies gave rise to modern gadgets, but “Star Wars: A New Hope” predicted many modern gadgets. We may not have reached that level of sophistication, but holograms have begun to be part of different methods of communication, and have had other applications as well, such as in cinema itself. Available on Disney+.

Blade Runner

Although for some we have already arrived at the cyberpunk society of Ridley Scott, technically modernity has surpassed the year 2019 in which ‘Blade Runner’ takes place. And while there are no flying cars yet, there are several technologies that are now commonplace, such as digital billboards, increasingly invasive advertising that is everywhere. Available on HBO Max.

star Trek

Probably one of science fiction films that invented more modern devices, being “Star Trek” from 1979. In Robert Wise’s tape you can see the use of cell phones, hearing aids, wireless signal transmission such as Bluetooth, and even translators for other languages. And also the history of this franchise prompted scientists to create gadgets that were first seen on the screen. Available on Claro and Amazon Prime Video.

back to the future 2

Although “Back to the Future 2” is always cited as a sci-fi film that featured various modern gadgets, the truth is that there are still no floating overboards or self-adjusting shoes. But what there is is video calling that allows anyone in the world to connect, as seen in the use of something like FaceTime in the second part of the trilogy. Available on Netflix, HBO Max, Claro and Amazon Prime Video.

total recall

Again, an idea from the mind of Phillip K. Dick, and which was adapted into Paul Verhoeven’s masterpiece ‘Total Recall’ and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. With so many gadgets, it’s easy to overlook that there are various devices that are now taken for granted, such as security scanners or AI-driven smart cars. Available on Amazon Prime Video.
