Director Rian Johnsonthe highly anticipated sequel Glass onion: a knife-edged mystery has been released, and it’s a blast! He took the foundation of the first film, a whodunnit murder mystery, and brought it to a new level of storytelling with an exceptionally outstanding all-star cast including Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautistaas well as returning star Daniel Craig.
It was a great movie and I can’t wait to see what Johnson does with the upcoming sequel on Netflix, but the only annoyance Johnson said he had with the streaming project was the film’s title. The director explained to Variety:
“I tried to make them autonomous. Honestly, I’m pissed that we have “A Knives Out Mystery” in the title. You know? I just want it to be called ‘Glass Onion.’”
He continued:
“I get, and I want everyone who enjoyed the first movie to know that this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is that it’s a new novel ready every time. But there is a gravity of a thousand suns to serialized storytelling.
I get that they were trying to tie the movies together, but I think with the return of Daniel Craig’s character Detective Benoit Blanc, the fans knew what the movie was all about. If this had just been Glass Onionwould have been both alone and related to Knives out. But oh well.
Johnson and Craig have already signed a deal to develop a third ‘Knives Out’ movie for Netflix. Suffice it to say, “A Knives Out Mystery” will likely remain in the title of the third film even if that’s not Johnson’s preference. The writer-director said so Variety earlier this year it won’t put a cap on the number of “Knives Out” movies it can make as long as each entry in the franchise can remain its own story.
“If each of these can really be what Agatha Christie done, if not only in a totally new location and with a new cast, but also trying something exciting, I will continue to do so as long as Daniel [Craig] and I’m enjoying it,” Johnson said. “I’ll keep making them as long as they let me.”
Glass Onion it is now streaming on Netflix.
