These were the highest grossing films of the year 2022

2022 is coming to an end and, like every year, it’s time to take stock of what the last 12 months have left behind. This path was to be marked by the economic recovery of cinemas after two years of the pandemic. However, moviegoers have had a hard time rediscovering the magic of the silver screen. Except for major film events, cinemas still have a hard time attracting audiences like they used to.

These were the highest grossing films of the year 2022

Indeed, once again, established superheroes and franchises were what allowed exhibitors to catch their breath. There is no doubt that the landscape is changing, viewers’ consumption habits are no longer what they used to be, and the ravages of COVID-19 have caused irreparable damage. Next we will look at what were the big hits around the world in general and in Spain in particular. Furthermore, in a golden year for Spanish cinema, we will also find out which national films have had the highest grossings.

The 10 highest grossing films in the world

In this 2022 there has been one name that has reigned in theaters above all others. A star who feels an immense love for cinema as an experience and who is willing to pass it on to eternity. Tom Cruise. The actor proved once again with “Top Gun: Maverick” that he knows better than anyone how it works, dethroning Marvel itself from the top spot. But be careful because ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ follows him at his heels.

The movie just hit theaters and it’s going at a hellish pace. James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel is going from record to record thanks, among other things, to its release in China. And it is that the Asian giant has its cinemas up and running once again, even launching two films in this ranking. Third place goes to the latest installment of ‘Jurassic World’ which brought the moviegoers into the theaters with a good horde of dinosaurs and most importantly a nostalgic reunion of the original ‘Jurassic Park’ cast.

1.- ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (1.488 million dollars)

2.- “Avatar: The Sense of Water” (1.025 million dollars)

3.- ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ (1.001 million dollars)

The 10 highest grossing films in Spain

Even in Spain, collection data remain at levels well below those of the pre-pandemic years. Only two tapes managed to exceed 20 million euros. For context, there were five in 2019 (the first, “The Lion King,” hit $37 million). As in the rest of the world, we Spaniards only go to the cinema for big events such as ‘Avatar: El sentido del agua’ and, in this course, with animated films such as the hilarious ‘Minions’ saga, which has resisted outside for over other.

In any case, we managed to get two Spanish films into our top 10 this year. Something that is always to be celebrated because our diminished industry needs it more than ever. One of these, of course, comes from the hand of the incombustible Santiago Segura. The other, the always reliable and funny Tadeo Jones and a crazy new adventure.

1.- “Avatar: The sense of water” (21 million euros)

2.- ‘Minions: The origin of Gru (20.7 million euros)

3.- ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ (18 million euros)

4.- ‘Father there is only one 3’ (15.6 million euros)

5.- “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (13.1 million)

6.- ‘Uncharted’ (12.2 million euros)

7.- ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Table’ (11.7 million euros)

8.- ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ (11.5 million euros)

9.- ‘The Batman’ (10.7 million euros)

The highest grossing Spanish films of 2022

As we have said, although it has not translated into spectators, this 2022 has brought one of the best harvests that can be remembered in Spanish cinema. Comedies, family dramas, musicals, animation, literary adaptations, rural thrillers… A huge variety and surprising quality. Spanish cinema, despite the numbers, has a lot to celebrate. Very.

A special mention deserves Carla Simón, who with ‘Alcarràs’ won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, one of the most important awards in the world. For such a humble production, getting that seventh place in the Spanish film ranking is a stratospheric merit. Too bad it dropped out of the Oscar race.

1.- ‘There is only one father 3’ (15.6 million euros)

2.- ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Table’ (11.7 million euros)

3.- ‘The crooked lines of God’ (5.7 million euros)

4.- ‘The fourth passenger’ (4,2)

5.- ‘A todo tren 2’ (3.4 million euros)

8.- “Model 77” (2.1 million euros)

9.- “I will have fun” (2 million euros)

10.- ‘The life of the father’ (2 million euros)
