‘The Witcher: The Origin of Blood’: Fans Destroy Miniseries and Say It Doesn’t Look Like ‘The Witcher’

“The Witcher: The Origin of Blood” has been in the top 10 on Netflix since its premiere on Christmas Day, but it looks like its success will stay there: the miniseries has the worst rating of the entire franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. The reasons are endless: a poor story without depth, some implausible interpretations and some special effects that leave much to be desired. The spirit of “The Witcher” is not present in the prequel.

Of the 24 posts from critics, only 38% agreed with the platform, compared to a whopping 81% for the original series. Negative comments mainly highlight this it does not exploit the source material of the books or the available actors and actressesespecially considering the important role of Michelle Yeoh, but she can’t fix it on her own.

In early reviews before its premiere, reporters were already hinting that the series was being rushed, awkwardly wrapping up the story after just four episodes. Slant Magazine writes it “the series turns out too hasty and dispersive to penetrate much beyond the surface of his universe and his characters”.

However, the palm is taken by public criticism, which absolutely destroys the prequel to “The Witcher”. Of the nearly 2,000 general audience scores, a small minority venture to rate it above one star, implying an 8% total score.. The main problem they find? It doesn’t look like “The Witcher” at all. Especially for fans of the novels, who repeatedly assure this “it has nothing to do with ‘The Witcher’, other than the name” and that he would have benefited from drawing more from the books. “Is that also ‘The Witcher’? It looks like I’m reading a first grade fantasy paper.”, writes one user. He’s not the only one who thinks so: many point out that he looks more like a “cheap fan fiction” What a top notch franchise.

In general, recent critics are divided between those who feel it should take longer to cover what it couldn’t, and those who feel that its feature-equivalent format does not excuse it from being wasteful. “Despite its fast-paced narrative and shocking action (thanks to Michelle Yeoh, for lending her influence and presence), ‘The Witcher: Dawn of Blood’ is just a waste of time”writes the San Francisco Chronicle. For its part, the London Evening Standard writes: “It’s hard to feel invested in the fate of the characters, who are ultimately little more than a footnote in the books [Andrzej] Sapkowski. How much “The Witcher” is too much? Here’s the answer”.

the missing piece

Being set 1200 years before the original series, ‘The Witcher: The Origin of Blood’ does not have the characters of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, but this is precisely one of the most criticized factors. Both the media and the mass of fans miss Henry Cavill, whom they will see only one last time in the third season of “The Witcher”. “It’s ‘The Witcher’ without the wizard”notes The AV Club in reference to the prequel. That could become the main thinking later, when Liam Hemsworth takes over from Cavill starting in season 4, or the new Sorcerer could live up to expectations. Of course, first we will see the worthy end that the original actor deserves.

Both the first two seasons of “The Witcher” and the mini-series of “The Witcher: The Origin of Blood” are available on Netflix.
