Gone are the days when anime was considered a Japanese niche, since ‘Akira’ brought this type of production to the West. Since then, production companies like Studios Ghiblo have been tasked with producing some of the best animated films of all time, and luckily, some of their most iconic work can be found on streaming platforms.

For those who don’t know him, or haven’t heard of him, the ideal is to enter with ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ in the Studio Ghibli best animated films. Directed by teacher Hayao Miyazaki, the story follows a small family of a father and two sisters who settle into a new house in the countryside, while the girls discover a mysterious forest spirit. In English, she featured the voices of Mark Hamill, Shia LaBeouf, Patrick Stewart and others. With a voice cast led by Christian Bale and Emily Mortimer, we have “El Castillo Vagabundo,” which for many is a studio favorite. It is the story of Sophie, a hatter who one quiet day is transformed into an old woman by a witch. Heartbroken, the girl seeks refuge in a magician’s traveling home. Available on Netflix.

The first foreign animated film to win an Oscar was “Spirited Away”, long the most successful anime of all time. It’s an instant classic that follows a ten-year-old girl in a magical and supernatural world where she’s trapped with her parents, turned into pigs, and she must find a way to get home to her family. The Grave of the Fireflies

And one of the best films of the studio, and which is curiously not by Hayao Miyazaki, is by Isao Takahata, is ‘Grave of the Fireflies’. The story follows two brothers who survived the first bombs dropped in World War II. Now homeless, both must find a way to survive in the midst of war. Available in film.
