Russian tourist Ekaterina Krasyukova survived a sudden flash flood at the Nepal border after climbing a mountain ladder with her travel group.
Krasyukova was traveling with a 12-member tourist group heading toward China on a tour around Mount Kailash when heavy flooding trapped dozens of buses waiting to cross the border. Passports had already been collected from the travelers when the floodwaters struck without warning.
The flood began when Krasyukova saw the cook from their Nepalese support team jump through a bus window. Looking to her left, she spotted fast-moving black masses of mud rushing toward their vehicle, prompting her to yell for others to head for the windows and run.
Driven by adrenaline, Krasyukova fled the bus and reached a nearby ladder leading up the mountain. She said the entire group scaled the ladder onto the rocks and grass above, escaping the deluge because their bus was parked behind a curve in the riverbed that shielded them from the main force of the water.
Krasyukova said she only fully registered what had happened while scrambling up the rocks. Heavy white fog enveloped the mountainside while roaring floodwaters created an overwhelming noise below.
All 12 members of the tourist group survived the disaster. The group included two Russian citizens, two American citizens, two Italian citizens who are husband and wife, one Swiss woman, and one Bulgarian woman.
Rescue Operations and Survival
Helicopters arrived several hours later to begin evacuations, but emergency crews could not rescue Krasyukova and her group on the first day. Looking down from their position, the survivors saw bodies lying in the mud below, leaving Krasyukova in a state of euphoria for having survived the catastrophe.
The border area lies along the Bhote Koshi River, a trans-boundary Himalayan waterway flowing from Tibet into Nepal. Mount Kailash, situated across the border in Tibet, is a sacred mountain peak that draws international travelers for trekking circuits around its base.
Rising Death Toll and Missing Tourists
The flooding began on August 26 when a massive torrent surged from Tibet into Nepal along the Bhote Koshi River. The sudden deluge was triggered by an earthquake and a subsequent landslide in the mountain region.
Authorities reported that the total death toll from the disaster has reached 469, while approximately 1,000 people remain missing across the region. Rescuers in Nepal have ended search operations for 11 missing Russian tourists, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
Among the missing Russian nationals whose search was called off are Anna Pak, Elena Oksyuz, Kirill Tretyakov, Oleg Tkachenko, Natalya Kiseleva, and Aleksandr Zimin.
