Dominican singer Ney Nilo awaits Acroarte award honor

Dominican singer-songwriter Ney Nilo faces growing calls in Santo Domingo for the Dominican Association of Art Journalists to grant him long-overdue institutional recognition.

Specialized media outlets report that the romantic ballad performer is among several popular artists who have never received a Soberano Award or an equivalent career honor despite decades of success.

The Dominican Association of Art Journalists, known as Acroarte, has organized the annual Soberano Awards for more than four decades to celebrate achievements in national culture and show business. Although the awards primarily evaluate artistic output within a single annual period, the organization's charter includes non-competitive honors for lifetime achievements.

These non-competitive categories include the Merit Award, the Special Soberano, and the Gran Soberano. Commentators point out that Acroarte has previously granted these extraordinary distinctions to artists across various disciplines whose contributions extend far beyond a single season.

A legacy in Dominican romantic music

Ney Nilo, who was born Manuel Modesto Cabrera Salas in the northern town of Navarrete, built a reputation as a lyric tenor with a distinct vocal style. During the 1980s and 1990s, he achieved widespread popularity with romantic hits such as Paloma dime por que, Te estoy amando, La carta, Balada para mi pais, and Te quiero mas.

Throughout those two decades, Nilo maintained an intense touring schedule, performing hundreds of concerts across the Dominican Republic and abroad, particularly in the United States. His songs earned a lasting place in the collective memory of the Dominican public.

Health setback and calls for a living tribute

His active music career was severely restricted in 2003 after he suffered a stroke. Although he attempted to return to the stage several years later, ongoing health issues ultimately forced him to step away from public life.

Advocates and cultural writers are now appealing directly to the Acroarte board of directors and the Soberano Awards committee to evaluate Nilo's career and present him with a special award. They emphasize that honoring the singer during his lifetime carries far greater symbolic value than a posthumous tribute, calling the proposed award a necessary act of cultural recognition for Dominican balladeers.
