Sam Ryder said after his debut album There’s Nothing But Space, Man! – topping the UK charts.
The 33-year-old singer finally took the top spot after coming second in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and reaching number two on the official singles chart earlier this year with his rousing pop song Space Man.
It is the first debut album by a British male solo artist to reach number one in over three years.

Sam, who struggled with health issues during the album’s promotion, told the Official Charts Company: “It seems like Christmas has come early because we hit a number one record together. Thank you all. If you knew how many people worked so hard on it, you’d be surprised. It is pure cooperation.
“It would not have been possible without so many fantastic, wonderful and optimistic legends. I love your peace.’
The album’s success caps off a huge year of triumph for the Essex singer, who shot to fame as a British Eurovision Song Contest hopeful narrowly missing out on top spot to Ukraine’s Kalush Band .

He performed at Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, performed at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium and sang a version of Queen’s Somebody To Love with Brian May, Roger Taylor and Foo Fighters, winning the commission to perform his own BBC One to have New Year’s TV special with guests of honor Mel C and Sigrid.
Sam, who caused chaos on Thursday during a performance discussing his single on This Morning while flouting television regulations, faced competition from American singer SZA’s highly anticipated second studio album SOS, which peaked at number two on the leaderboard.
Now hitting the singles charts, Last Christmas by Wham! secured the top spot with 11.4 million streams according to the Official Charts Company.
Originally released in 1984, the song once held the record for the best-selling single to never reach number one in the UK and was famously performed by Band Aids Do They Know It’s Christmas? held in second place.
It first peaked on New Year’s Day 2021, when it broke a chart record for the time it took a song to top the singles chart, which is now held by Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill.
A total of six of this week’s top 10 songs are Christmas carols, including Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and Michael Buble’s cover of ‘It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas’.
