Silent Twins star Letitia Wright has revealed that she drew on experiences when she first came to the UK to inspire her performance in the film.
The 29-year-old actress plays a Bajan immigrant named June Gibbons who moved to Pembrokeshire, Wales as a child in 1974 with her twin sister Jennifer.
The twins were mercilessly bullied because of their accents and Letitia shared how she related to her experience after trying to change her own voice as a child.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Letitia moved to London with her family at the age of seven.
Because of the abuse they faced growing up, June and Jennifer rarely spoke to anyone but each other.
Letitia said she understood how the twins would feel differently. When she came to the UK from Guyana, she was told that her accent didn’t sound right.
She told the Independent: “I tried to change it in the mirror to try and sound like my friends at school.”

Tamara Lawrance, 28, who played Jennifer, could also relate to the sense of being different and different that the twins felt.
She said:[I’m] someone raced and slaughtered black as a woman.
“I think the world has given those factors a pretty bad smear — usually pretty weak, inferior, incompetent.”
The actress explained that the commitment to being yourself in the midst of all the things thrown at you is something she can identify with.

The duo was cast in the 2020 film, which also describes how the twins dress alike, move together and have secret laws with each other.
Sometimes the twins would take turns eating, so on certain days only one of the twins could eat.
Tamara and Letitia worked for a year before filming to become as close as the twins, reviewing archival documents and other footage and rehearsing together.
Letitia said that they came up with things they both enjoyed doing, which helped them develop a routine.
After a long day at work, they could make poetry, write and hang pictures on the wall.
They also took great care of themselves to fit the characters and make room for vulnerability and interesting characters.

Both wanted to do justice to the story and remain authentic in the ups and downs of their journey. One of the twins, Jennifer, died of a sudden heart attack in 1993 at the age of 29. June lives and works in Wales.
The film chronicles their lives, including the time when the twins were sentenced to indefinite prison terms at Broadmoor Mental Hospital after crimes they committed in 1981.
They were keen creative writers looking for dramatic life experiences to add interest to their short stories.
This meant that they were involved in crime and abused alcohol and drugs.
Both remained at Broadmoor for 11 years, a sentence described by both actresses as harsh.
Letitia explained that the acting in this part of the film was exhausting and described it as grueling.

The actress said the idea of them being in Broadmoor for so long stuck with her, especially as they were repeatedly told they could leave if they took their medication.
Letitia said staff kept telling them no, something she struggled with.
Meanwhile, Tamara said despite the grueling nature of the experience, she is eager to tell people’s stories.
She said we should give the stories a platform so that people can learn from them.
