UPDATED: elvis Star Austin Butler will receive the Breakthrough Achievement Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival Gala on January 5.
Butler joins this year’s previously announced honorees Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, Sarah Polley and Michelle Yeoh The Fables for the annual opening event of the festival.

EARLY, 1 AM: Steven Spielberg’s The Fables received the Vanguard Award at the 2023 Palm Springs Film Festival Gala in January.
The semi-autographic film follows a young man’s discovery of a shocking family secret and explores the power of film to help us discover the truth about each other and ourselves. Gabriel LaBelle, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters, Robin Bartlett, Keeley Karsten and Judd Hirsch star in the pic, which was written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner.
The Fables began its limited release last month and averaged $40,000 per theater at four locations in New York and Los Angeles.
Last year’s Vanguard Award, Kenneth Branaghs Belfastwhen it received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won for Branagh’s original screenplay.

EARLY November 29: Michelle Yeo receives the International Star Award, Actress at the 2023 Palm Springs Film Festival Gala in January.
Yeo was recognized for her work in A24 Everything, everywhere, all at once, which won Best Picture at Monday’s Gotham Awards. She is last on the party’s roll of honour; The group will be honored at the launch ceremony on January 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
Penélope Cruz, last year’s Palm Springs winner in the category International Star, Actress, received an Oscar nomination for best actress. Previous winners include Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan and Charlize Theron.
In the Daniels direction Everything, everywhere, all at once, Yeo plays Evelyn, an overworked immigrant mother. When an interdimensional rift threatens to unravel reality, the fate of the world suddenly lies in their hands. The picture, which debuts at SXSW this year, also has eight Spirit Awards nominations, including Yeoh and Best Picture.

The Palm Springs Film Festival takes place from January 5th to 16th.
So far, November 21: Cate Blanchett, the two-time Oscar winner and seven-time nominee, her latest film tar Premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the award for lead actor, received the Palm Springs Film Festival’s Desert Palm Achievement, Actress, 2023 Award.
In the film, she plays Lydia Tár, an orchestra conductor who is considered one of the greatest in her field and is the first principal conductor of a major German orchestra. Watch the trailer here.

So far, November 18: Sarah Polley, her latest film women talk opens in theaters in December and was named Director of the Year by the Palm Springs Film Festival. The honor will be presented at PSIFF’s annual awards gala on January 5 to launch the 2023 edition of the festival.

Adapted and directed by Polley, women talk follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they struggle to reconcile their beliefs in the face of a series of attacks by the colony’s men. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod, Kate Hallett, Liv McNeil and August Winter star Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand.
The movie hits theaters on December 2.
