In doing so, Queensland-born Mitcham made history by becoming the first openly gay male Olympic champion.
After his victory in Beijing, Mitcham became addicted to dope ice cream when he realized that despite his Olympic success, he wasn’t world-first in the world rankings.
Incredibly, Mitcham felt unsuccessful and soon found himself training and competing while dealing with a crippling drug addiction.
Mitcham said he hasn’t touched any medication since officially quitting diving in 2016 and marrying his partner, Luke Rutherford, in 2020.
