But co-writer and director Park Chan-wook says he’s determined to tell a story that sets the film apart.
“My challenge was to tell a unique story from that premise,” Park said through a translator at Saturday’s Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles Awards Season Event.
The film, South Korea’s entry in the Oscar nominations for Best International Film, is about a detective investigating the death of a man in the mountains who, in the course of his tireless criminal investigation, meets the dead man’s mysterious wife .
To add a twist to the story, Park cast Chinese actress Tang Wei as a widow.
“Since I saw Ang Lee’s lust, caution“I’ve always wanted to work with her,” said the filmmaker.
Since the actress is not fluent in Korean, the challenge was to come up with a believable storyline that would explain her limited Korean.
“I had a plan to use the language barrier as a central element of the film,” said Park.
decided to go debuted at Cannes, where Park won Best Director. The film hit US theaters last month after Mubi secured the North American rights.
