In a career that proves there isn’t a film genre he can’t take to the next level, writer/director/producer Rian Johnson is now reaching a career high with a film that has not only proven profitable, but … proved creative with the award-winning franchise knife out movies. The first in 2018 was one of the biggest hits of the year and earned Johnson his first Oscar nomination for the original screenplay. Bidding for the sequel rights skyrocketed, and eventually Netflix beat out original distributor Lionsgate in a reported $450 million deal for two sequels. The first of them Glass Onion: A Mystery of Blades was a huge hit at its world premiere in Toronto earlier this year and now gets its most unique release ever from a streamer, as the three major exhibition chains will show the film (around 600 screens in total) for a week before its debut on Netflix at the end of December.
Johnson joins my Deadline video series, Behind the lens this week to talk about this phenomenon, how long he plans to keep this franchise, his collaboration with star Daniel Craig, and how he revived this genre. We also like to talk about his past successes Brick, Looper, Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi, and even these two classic episodes of break bad He led. He also talks about how hard it was to start and all the rejections from USC Cinema School before he finally found a way to get in. Join me every Friday during Oscar season for a new episode of Behind the lens.
