‘Fire Of Love’, ‘The Territory’ and ‘All That Breathes’ Lead the Way in Cinema Eye Honors Nominations Announcement

The Oscar prospects for fire of love, the territoryand Anything that breathes got a big boost today with the announcement of the nominations for the 16the Annual Cinema Eye Honors.

Sarah Dosa fire of love and that of Alex Pritz the territory tied with seven leading nominations each Anything that breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, won awards in half a dozen categories. Other Oscar nominees All the beauty and the bloodshed – the winner of the Golden Lion of Venice, directed by Laura Poitras – and Payal Kapadia A night of not knowing received four nominations.

Six films are competing for the Cinema Eye Honors in the main category of Outstanding Non-Fiction Feature: Anything that breathes; All the beauty and the bloodshed; fire of love; Navalny — documentary by Daniel Roher about the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny; A night of not knowingand the territory [see the full list of nominees below].

Pritz, with which he makes his film debut the territory, received five individual nominations — more than anyone else — including Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Debut, though he missed out on an Outstanding Director nomination. Five women were nominated in the latter category: Poitras (All the beauty and the bloodshed); Rebecca Hunt for baby; Margaret Brown for descendant; dose (fire of love) and Kapadia (A night of not knowing). The only male director nominated was Senfor Anything that breathes.

The nominations mark a remarkably strong year for HBO. The premium cable platform topped all distributors and broadcasters with a total of 30 nominations, followed by 17 nominations for National Geographic Documentary Films, 17 for NEON/Super LTD, eight for Netflix, and seven each for Participant and Picturehouse.

The Cinema Eye Honors were established in 2007 to “celebrate excellence in art and craftsmanship in non-fiction filmmaking”. the 16e The annual edition of the awards ceremony will be presented on Thursday, January 12 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.
