To James Cameron, it smelled like roast meat.
The absence of “Avatar-2” in the Russian cash register does not threaten a financial collapse for the picture. But Hollywood and James Cameron will feel the effects of this cancellation firsthand.
Experts in the world are already not giving the most favorable predictions for the collections of the December premiere. It is estimated that the film will gross approximately $650 million in the US and Canada, while the first installment grossed nearly $800 million in 2009.
Film critic Oksana Agapova explained in an interview with PopCornNews: Russia, in terms of general indicators, accounted for about two percent of the world box office in pre-Covid times, which is very small. The Russian market was important to Cameron for a very different reason.
“The problem here is more of an image problem. Because a movie like Avatar is the hallmark of the Hollywood mission. And the loss of the Russian film market is serious business.”
