How Tragedy Changed Cult Film: Ryazanov Had to Rewrite Office Romance

The director managed to get out of a difficult situation.

Accidents happen regularly on set. The creators of the cult film “Office Romance” encountered a serious incident while working on the picture.

According to the Dom Kino portal, director Eldar Ryazanov changed the script at the last minute due to a tragic circumstance that happened to one of the actors.

According to the original idea, the conversations of the secretary Verochka, played by Liya Akhedzhakova, with her husband would take place at her workplace. The role of the husband was supposed to go to the actor Alexander Fatyushin.

But when work on the “Office Romance” had already begun, sad news came about Fatyushin’s serious injury. During the performance, his eye was injured and he was unable to act. Ryazanov, in order not to radically change the script or look for a new actor, simply turned all the dialogues of Vera and her husband into a telephone conversation.
