Adele beat Dave Chappelle and Norma Macdonald for Emmy’s Outstanding Variety Special.
The CBS special, produced by Fulwell 73 and Onward Productions in association with Harpo Productions, won an award at tonight’s Creative Arts ceremony.

Adele: only one night The British singer sang songs from her new album at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. Presented by Oprah Winfrey, it aired in November.
The award was received by executive producer Ben Winston, who dedicated it to his mother, Lyra Helen Feigenbaum, who died this summer.
“I think you can tell by the look on our faces that we are really surprised. But let’s be honest, you can shoot [Adele] with an iPhone in a cardboard box and won an Emmy, “he said.

The win is a real surprise given the stiff competition, especially MacDonald’s posthumous special on Netflix, as well as Chappelle’s controversial special. It was a shame for Chappelle as his special was also beaten by Adele. Stan Lathan lost to Paul Dugdale for Outstanding Directing in the Variety Special category.
Adele’s CBS special also received an award Excellent lighting design / lighting direction for versatility.
