Editor’s Note: Deadline presents the 28th episode of its video series Take two (hitherto known as two shots), in which Pete Hammond and Todd McCarthy tackle the art of cinema. Each has spent decades discussing and writing about the craft and has amassed a considerable breadth of knowledge about past and present films. What we expected when we asked them to do this was a succinct, mature and thoughtful conversation comparable to that of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.

For this week’s edition of our Deadline video series take two Let’s consider the idea that perhaps the traditional idea of a “movie star” being an instant blockbuster, no matter what it is in, is a relic of the past. Then again, we also wonder if this could really be Newman’s youngest star in 1986. color of money Tom Cruise, who is the last real movie star, at least in terms of being able to open a movie with just his name.

Or some successful franchise that continues to capture them? Did the golden age of Hollywood with real movie stars like Gable, Crawford, Davis, Bogart, Cagney just “go with the wind” so to speak? We are researching this topic and trying to get answers.
