Coronation Street saw Audrey Roberts’ son Stephen return to the cobblestones for the first time in 15 years on Friday night (June 24).

But ITV viewers seemed to be quite distracted by Stephen’s accent during the episode.

Actor Todd Boyce reprized the role of Stephen this week, but the soap opera wasted no time in throwing him overboard.

In dramatic scenes, Stephen finds his mother Audrey (Sue Nicholls) passed out on the ground after falling the night before.

He had to break down a door to find poor Audrey, trapped under a motorcycle all night, and take her to the hospital.

Stunned, Stephen managed to call an ambulance to treat Audrey, but was furious at the Platt family for leaving her alone all night.

He directed his anger towards his sister Gail Platt (Helen Worth), who certainly didn’t expect to see Stephen.

He said to her, “Don’t worry about me, what about mom? How did you let that happen? Did any of you notice that she was missing?

However, fans were more concerned about Stephen’s accent, who is now Canadian after moving away years ago.

One wrote: “Stephen’s voice. What is it about? It’s strange.”

Another asked: “Steven / Stephen … how did you deal with that ‘Canadian’ accent?”

A third wrote: “Stephen thinks he’s in an 80s action movie #Corrie.”

A fourth added: “WTF is that #Corrie accent.”

Although Stephen is Audrey’s biological son, she had to give him up for adoption after his birth.

He emigrated to Canada with his adoptive parents Malcolm and Joyce Reid.

The last time it appeared on Coronation Street was in 2007.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
