Helen Worth plays coronation icon Gail Platt on ITV’s popular soap opera, but before landing her famous role, the actress suffered a tragedy after her mother was murdered.
Gail Platt is worried about her mom Audrey Roberts on Coronation Street this week after Audrey started drinking more than usual.
Gail and Audrey are one of the soap opera’s most iconic mother-daughter duets, with the two characters’ lives regularly intertwined in some of Coronation Street’s biggest storylines.
Away from the cobbles, Gail actress Helen Worth also spoke candidly about her mother, who tragically died when she was younger, and when she wanted to tell her that she had landed her famous role.
Born Cathryn Helen Wigglesworth to parents Alfred and Gladys, the star grew up in Morecambe, Lancashire, later adopting her middle name as a stage name.
Her parents and grandparents supported her artistic career and her grandmother ran a guesthouse for music hall artists, which inspired Helen to pursue acting.
However, Helen suffered a tragedy after her mother died in a fatal accident when she was only 20 years old.
Speaking with, the actress revealed her sadness that her mother never saw her in the role of Gail and said she would like to tell him.
“The only person I really wanted to talk to when I landed the role of Gail was my mom,” said Helen.
“She would have been so excited. More excited than me. She had been there the whole time: at dance lessons, holding my hand before competitions, wearing her best costume to take me to auditions in London. In the end I did, she wasn’t there to share it with me. I have never missed her so much ”.
After landing her now famous role, Helen has become one of the most famous mothers of children on screen, including Sarah Platt, David Platt and Nick Tilsdley.
From teenage pregnancies, to supporting her children during illness, to being a shoulder to cry on for many residents, Gail Platt has become a Coronation Street icon.
Speaking at the Tesco Mum of The Year Awards, she also said she has “two beautiful children I love to work with,” in a sweet nod to her on-screen family.
