In the era of streaming, when you can start a movie, even on the phone, even on the screen of the fridge, a trip to the cinema is no longer mandatory for many spectators.
But David Lynch – one of the most influential directors of our time – was convinced until the end of his life: there are films that simply lose the meaning “at home”.
In an interview with the New York Times, he explained:
“In the cinema a person falls into another world. Nothing will replace a large screen and voluminous sound. And if you look at the laptop – this is a miserable parody of the film.”
As an example, the director gave the photo of Stanley Kubrick “2001: Space Odyssey.”
“This movie on a small screen is just a miserable joke,” said Lynch.
Kubrick’s fantastic masterpiece was released in 1968 and immediately changed the idea of Science Fiction. The photo is striking in the scale of visual solutions:
- Neon palette and retro-futuristic design;
- The cult scene “Star Gate”;
- The final image of the cosmic baby.
According to Lynch, all this creates a psychedelic spectacle that loses the whole effect when you look at it on a small screen.
“A terrible sound, terrible image”

The director spoke sharply about how the public is increasingly replacing cinema rooms with computers and tablets:
“A terrible sound, a terrible image – people think they have watched the film, but in fact there is none.”
Many cinema visitors agree with Lynch. One of the fans who visited London Prince Charles Cinema, where the “Cosmic Odyssey” was shown on a 70 mm film, admitted:
“Only then did I understand this film. The space seemed to open in front of my eyes, and I ended up in this universe, along with the hall of full spectators.”
