“Materialist” is the new film Selin Song, The Region “Fast Lives”. This time, in the middle of the plot, New York, rich men, expensive apartments and the main character, cracks between how correct and how real.
Lucy (Dakota Johnson) meets Harry (Pedro Pascal) – successful, calm, generous. He books a trip to Iceland, walks past the galleries, knows what to say and how to look. Everything is too perfect. And then she accidentally discovers that he had an operation to expand his legs – for one hundred thousand dollars for six extra centimeters.
And here everything moves in her head. She saw trust in him, but it turned out – these are just complexes with beautiful packaging. He seems to be a male, but there is no real one here. Lucy cancels Iceland, separated with Harry.
But there is a problem – she has already rented her apartment. And then she writes to John (Chris Evans).
John is the first. He always believed that he could not give Lucy what others gave: he had no money, he worked as a bartender and wrote the piece parallel. Now they put the piece, he earned a little. He takes her, happiness outside the city, they accidentally fall into someone else’s wedding and stay overnight. In the morning he admits that he still wants to be with Lucy.
He receives no answer. But when her boyfriend calls a panic, she has an aggressively coordinated former under her door – Lucy Rent to the rescue. John is lucky back to New York and just waits all night in the car.
Only then does she understand the difference. They knew how good he looks. The second was just in the neighborhood when it was important.
John Haar makes an offer in the central park in the final. She says yes. And then – another turn: she is offered a top position with a huge salary. Will she agree? The film does not answer. But in the scene after the credits, she and John documents submit to registration of the marriage.
By that time, Harry is already going out with a new girl – also from the art world. So the “materialist” still ends with a kind of happy ending for all participants in a love triangle.
