Steven Spielberg names his favorite film: it is a classic from the 60s

He saw him as a teenager and was speechless.

When the British Film Institute presented its list of the “greatest films of all time” in 2022, it discovered an omission that sparked outrage among film fans.

The top 100 included ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Seven Samurai’ and ‘Taxi Driver’, but Steven Spielberg’s most favorite film, for which he had repeatedly declared his love, was missing.

We are talking about David Lean’s 1962 adventure drama Lawrence of Arabia.

The film not only collected seven Oscar statuettes, but united critics and viewers, who gave it a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

For many people this is an epic film, a historical action film, a new take on the legendary intelligence officer, but for Spielberg it is much more.

“It was the first movie of my life and it was the movie that defined my career choice. I saw it in Phoenix when I was 13 or 14 years old, and it took my breath away,” he recalls.

Only over time did the director realize that he could not grasp the enormity of the experience and process what he saw on screen all at once.

“I left the cinema shocked and speechless. And I wanted to know how this movie was made,” Spielberg said.

There was no social media back then, no DVD extras (or DVD player). The only thing the future filmmaker had at his disposal was a vinyl record with the soundtrack by Maurice Jarre.

And as you’d expect, he did what every fan of this timeless classic should do: watch it on 70mm film.
