Seven days of counting down and a monster on TV? There’s something worse.
Japanese horror films have always been able to penetrate the darkest corners of our minds, creating an atmosphere of tension and fear, not relying on special effects, but playing on psychology. Their terrifying aesthetics and disturbing images have given the genre a cult status all over the world. And almost no screamers – learn, Hollywood!
Although many are familiar with the legendary ‘The Ring’, it is far from the only masterpiece of Japanese horror. In this article we have collected the 10 scariest Japanese films of all time – and The Ring comes in second place. It will be scary – we warned you.

So who else managed to scare viewers more than the cult “The Ring”? We bet you were a little surprised to see “The Curse” in first place.
Like The Ring, the first Grudge, released in 2002, was the start of a legendary horror franchise. But the first film is traditionally considered the best – many viewers have told how they were afraid to stay in their own homes after watching ‘The Grudge’.
At the same time, we can safely admit the obvious: in the company of friends and in daylight, the film can seem long and even funny. But if, as expected, you turn it on at midnight and turn up the volume…
On Rotten Tomatoes, the first “The Grudge” has 64% of critics and 67% of audience. On Kinopoisk, the ratings are of course somewhat more modest: only 6.7.
