These film adaptations were so badly shot that even the authors of the books hated them

Film adaptations of books always cause a wave of anticipation and fear among fans of the original works. After all, even the most talented director can twist the plot or fail to capture the spirit of the book, making mistakes that the audience may be willing to forgive, but the authors are never willing to forgive.

Sometimes attempts to bring a story from page to screen end so badly that the writers themselves openly express their dissatisfaction. We’ve collected 10 film adaptations that, according to their original writers, were complete failures.

It is difficult to blame authors who hate film adaptations of their books in advance: history has too many examples of adaptations completely distorting the original source. Among the classics of literature, many authors were against film adaptations.

Agatha Christie, for example, hated them so much that her friends and family sometimes had to warn her which films she shouldn’t see, anticipating her reaction. And the long-standing Hollywood dream of making a film of Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye” was dashed by just one failed film adaptation — “My Foolish Heart.”

Interestingly, after the success of The Catcher in the Rye, despite the author’s ban, proposals for a film adaptation continued to pour in, including, ironically, from My Foolish Heart producer Samuel Goldwyn. But Salinger was adamant: he banned not only film adaptations, but even performances based on his novel.
