The most important series of the year?
Following the box office success of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, HBO producers decided to create an entire franchise around the realistic blockbuster starring Robert Pattinson and greenlit production of the Penguin series.
The role of gangster Oswald Cobblepot was reprised by Colin Farrell, with Craig Zobel in the director’s chair. The duo worked well together: the first episode of Penguin has just hit streaming and fans are already calling it the best series of the year.
DC fans have compared Penguin to The Sopranos and The Wire, noting that the crime story of Oswald’s rise to power feels more like a proper drama than a boring comic book movie.
Zobel packed a lot of impressive action scenes into the first episode, so fans were completely satisfied with the pilot episode. In addition, viewers were treated to an unexpected cameo at the end of the episode: actor Clancy Brown appeared in the form of gangster Salvatore Maroni, Oswald’s main rival.
IMDb users rated the quality of the series on 8.8 points, and the first episode even became the highest-rated pilot of 2024 – viewers gave it a rating of 9.1 points.
Farrell’s stunning performance and thrilling crime showdowns are sure to make “Penguin” the biggest hit of the fall, and critics are already predicting a slew of Golden Globe nominations for the series and its actors.
The show has only one major drawback: Reeves has already stated that waiting for Pattinson to comeo in the series is simply pointless. This is a completely independent story and Batman has nothing to do with it.
The second episode of Penguin premieres on HBO on September 29.
