The new thriller starring Joey King was slammed by critics, but still tops Netflix

It took just a few days for the sci-fi action film “Ugly,” starring “Kaleidoscope of Kisses” star Joey King, to become a new strange phenomenon on Netflix. The film, which debuted online on September 13, almost immediately rose to the top of streaming and still held the number one spot on the global list – but neither critics nor even viewers wanted to contribute to it in any way.

So a few days after the premiere, only “Urodina”. 19% approval from critics and 53% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and the numbers are backed up by scathing reviews that criticize literally every detail of the film.

Nevertheless, despite all its shortcomings, public interest in ‘Ugly’ continues to grow, and while few are excited, Netflix’s data clearly indicates that streaming users are still willing to give the new product a chance.

The action of “Ugly” takes place in the distant future, where people, wanting to avoid any discrimination, after reaching the age of 16 undergo a special operation that makes them beautiful – those who avoid the procedure are called ugly.

15-year-old best friends Tully (Joey King) and Paris (Chase Stokes) are excited about their transformation, but things don’t go according to plan when Paris, after undergoing surgery, refuses to communicate with Tully.

Then the latter finds a new friend Shay (Brianne Tju) – she, on the other hand, tries with all her might to avoid the operation and therefore hides among the members of the Smoke community, which values ​​human individuality above all else. When the head of the city convinces Tully that the smoky people are preparing a provocation, the heroine understands that her friend urgently needs to be saved.
