Did you think this was the writers’ imagination?
Heists are one of the most exciting genres in cinema, even when what happens on screen isn’t inspired by real events. And when daring heists that once made real headlines are brought to the screen, it’s even more exciting to watch.
Today we’ve rounded up 10 heist movies that amaze with their audacity, inventiveness, and sometimes absurdity. And yes, they all actually happened in real life – although when you watch them on screen, it’s hard to believe that these aren’t assumptions from a Hollywood script.
Perhaps one of the most interesting films in our selection is ‘American Animals’. Yes, all the films on our list are inspired by real events, but not all of them intertwine fictional action with documentary footage.
Because that’s exactly what the makers of ‘American Animals’ did – in addition to the acting of Barry Keoghan and Evan Peters, we could see supplements with interviews with real robbers who planned to rob the Transylvania University library. The movie was filmed during spring break 2017 in the library of a private university in North Carolina. Some of the library employees were even offered episodic roles (one was even approved!), but in the end none of the employees were cast in the film – they didn’t want to take them away from their official duties.
But Keoghan and Peters themselves were forbidden to interact with the prototypes – so that they would not perceive them biasedly and sympathize with them.
