Only masterpieces.
Martin Scorsese has devoted most of his career to gangster films and historical dramas, but the director himself loves science fiction films. Scorsese grew up watching classic films about time travel and landing on the moon, and loves sharing great science fiction films with his fans.
The director was recently asked to name some of the best science fiction films of all time, and he immediately came up with a list of six films that surprised even the most devoted fans of the genre.

These are the films Scorsese called the best:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (dir. Stanley Kubrick)
- The Thing (dir. John Carpenter)
- Strangers Among Us (director John Carpenter)
- Metropolis (dir. Fritz Lang)
- Invaders from Mars (dir. William Cameron Menzies)
- A Trip to the Moon (dir. Georges Méliès)
Scorsese apparently decided not to show off his knowledge of obscure films and only named his favorites.
The “Goodfellas” director surprised many with his love for Carpenter’s films, but fans were more interested in the film “Aliens from Mars.” It is certainly considered a cult classic, but its popularity does not even come close to that of the other films on the list.

Most likely, Scorsese named Invaders from Mars the best due to the fact that it came out during his youth and was possibly the first science fiction film of his life.
After such a successful list, fans began bombarding Scorsese with requests to make his own sci-fi film. But given the director’s age and busy schedule, it’s unlikely he’ll ever decide to take on such a project.
