How do midwives transform a breech or transverse baby?

A baby usually moves into an inverted (face down) position by 36 weeks of pregnancy.

However, if the hips or feet are first (breech) or sideways (transverse position), they should be moved after 37 weeks of pregnancy to avoid complications during delivery.

The midwife may recommend ECV, a technique known as the external cephalic version.

The procedure usually begins with an injection to loosen the uterus before applying gentle pressure to the abdomen to help the baby turn inside the womb until it turns over.

The doctor or midwife will place their hands on their tummy and encourage the baby to roll forward or backward to turn the baby upside down.

The technique, described as “somewhat irritating”, was successful in 40 percent of new mothers and was described as “generally safe.”

However, due to complications, one out of 200 babies must be delivered by emergency cesarean section.

If the baby’s displacement fails, doctors will discuss a vaginal breech delivery or a cesarean delivery.
