Who even decided it was a good idea to release this to screens?
This question arose among the public after the release of the first part of Queen U.
What was intended to be a breathtaking historical drama turned out to be a flop for several reasons. In order not to go into unnecessary detail, we will reveal a few basic details, but first the synopsis.
After the death of the ruler of Goguryeo, five warring clans begin to fight for power. In an attempt to avoid bloodshed, the Queen Dowager decides to choose one of the princes within 24 hours, marry him, and place him on the throne.
Critics were stunned and chose unflattering epithets to describe the story:
“As dull as dishwater and as dry as old biscuits, this supposedly grandiose drama about palace conspiracies and their nefarious participants is too general and lacks any intrigue.”
The screenwriters were accused of artificially complicating the story, making it easy for viewers to lose track of the plot and become confused by the events that transpired.
The production cost 30 billion won (or 22 million dollars), one of the record amounts for Korean television, but this money is simply not visible on camera.
No matter how hard the performers worked on the costumes and sets, the cameramen made the screen so dark that they eliminated the chance of seeing them – just like in The Battle of Winterfell.
Only if sexual content in “Game of Thrones” was the highlight of the show, have sex scenes become a major issue here.
Although dramas are not known for their spicy content, it does not mean that filmmakers do not know how to handle such material. It is true that such professionals were not invited to the set.
Therefore, intimate moments are devoid of emotions and even a hint of eroticism: either the leader of the tribe is satisfied by a servant during a gathering, or the king’s younger brother kills his wife with a sword after intercourse on the table.
