All ages are subject to love…or not.
For nearly thirty years, the relationship between Rose Dewitt-Bukater and Jack Dawson seemed to the world’s audience a near-perfect love story.
That’s true, but one detail left out in time would likely have robbed the creators of an Oscar.
First things first.
Fans know that Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio met on set and quickly found a common language and became bosom buddies.
This was largely due to the similar ages of the actors.
It is true that the palpable “chemistry” between the main characters is not everything. Viewers know that the closer the actor is to the character’s age, the more convincing he looks on camera.
And if there had been no problems with “Romeo” – Leo was 21 years old and Jack was 20 years old – then the situation with “Juliet” would have been different.
Let’s just say the film would have caused real discomfort and barely been a box office hit if Kate had been Rose’s age.
At the time of filming, Winslet was 20 years old, and in the original draft of the script, her character boarded the ship as a 17-year-old girl.
This is where the problems started.
She was originally set to be married to 30-year-old Caledon Hockley (played by 31-year-old Billy Zane), but instead fell in love with an artist four years her senior.
And while in 1912 such an age difference wouldn’t have bothered anyone, in the 1990s people would have sensed that something was wrong.
Secondly, few people would be able to fully enjoy the explicit scenes with the naked star on the couch and in the car if she were a minor.
Fortunately, James Cameron and his team corrected this problem, making the film an immortal classic.
