It was a cool move.

Fans of “House of the Dragon” were already divided into two camps at the beginning of the season: those who criticized the project and those who fell in love with it even more. George Martin unexpectedly found himself in the latter camp. Moreover, the writer said on social networks that he had already watched the released episodes and really appreciated the product.

Martin also talked about his exciting excursion to the film set at Leavesden Studios in England, which he made in November. Surprisingly, the author of the cult books did not say a bad word about the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’. He praised the actors, the writers, the costume designers, in general, everyone.

And when it turned out that one of the episodes featured a character who wasn’t in Martin’s book, the world held its breath: well, now the ambitious author will lose his patience and tear to pieces the plot decision he made to circumvent his recommendations. We’re talking about the mercenary’s dog Cheese. But George Martin’s answer surprised everyone. Here’s what the author said:

“I’m… ahem… normally not a fan of writers adding characters to the source material when adapting a story. Especially when the source material is mine. But this dog was brilliant.

I was ready to hate Cheese, but I hated him even more when he kicked that dog. And later, when the dog at his feet said, looking up… it came damn near breaking my heart. Such a small creature… such a small dog… but his presence, the few brief moments he was on screen, gave the Pied Piper so much humanity.

People are such complex creatures. The quiet presence of this dog reminded us that even the worst people, the despicable and the corrupt, can love and be loved. I wish I had thought of this dog. I didn’t think so, but someone else did. I’m glad I did.”
