The directors really liked him.
It turns out that the actor who became the star of the series Stranger Things could appear in Game of Thrones. He even appeared in the pilot episode, but that was as far as it went. And not because he got kicked out of school; he didn’t want to. Apparently, he underestimated the potential of the project.
Which actor are we talking about?
We’re talking about Jamie Campbell Bower. In the fourth season of Stranger Things, he played Peter Ballard, a nurse at Pennhurst Mental Hospital.
He also has projects such as “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (the role of sailor Anthony Hope), “Twilight” (the role of the vampire Kai) “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (the role of young Gellert Grinde-Wald).

Why didn’t it work with HBO?
In Game of Thrones, the actor could play Waymar Royce, the youngest son of Lord Runestone John Royce and brother of Robar Royce. His noble lineage and good weapons skills could make the character a scout for the Night’s Watch.

Jamie even starred in the pilot episode, which they decided to reshoot after it was released. Many of the actors were replaced by the showrunners themselves, but Bauer decided to leave the project on his own (his place was eventually taken by Rob Ostler). And the reason for this was the high employment of the actor. He probably had no idea how popular the series would become and wasted no time. I wonder if he would have stayed if he had heard about the future scope of the project?
