“Game of Thrones” ended a long time ago, but the series that are compared to it keep coming. So in February 2024, a new Japanese show premiered that looked a lot like HBO’s masterpiece. We’ll tell you what it’s about, what the ratings are, and whether it’s worth watching.

What is the name of the series and what is it about?

The project was called “Shogun”, which translates into Russian as commander, “commander”. This series became the second film adaptation of James Clavell’s novel (the first came out in 1980).

The main character is an English navigator named John Blackthorn. He sailed to Japan with the goal of destroying the Portuguese settlements. Here fate brings him together with Yoshi Toranaga, a member of the council of regents. John helps Toranaga by educating his people, and in doing so he learns the Japanese language and learns more about the culture.

The series itself is a very good excursion into the culture of the country, but also a good guide to its history. Moreover, all the characters have real prototypes. For John, for example, this is William Adams, about whom you can read more on Wikipedia.

As for ‘Game of Thrones’, both series are not only similar in their medieval setting, but also in the number of complexities. Yes, in Shogun they may not be of the same magnitude, but they still keep the viewer in suspense, making them wonder what will happen next. There are not as many bloody battles here (although there are some), but that does not make the series any worse. Viewers note the cool cast, the rich imagery and the well-translated atmosphere.

On Kinopoisk, they gave the project a confident eight and even included the series in the top 250, placing it at 48th place. IMDb has even more points – 8.7, while “The Game” itself has 9.2 points. Based on the viewing figures and rave reviews, we conclude that the series is definitely worth a chance.
