The main character is a carbon copy of Mikasa and Annie from Attack on Titan.

Anime is not only made in Japan, but still this country has become a real monopolist in this field. This is not surprising: the genre works best where it was invented. It would seem that Russian anime in general should be a complete failure. And in 2009 this happened: a work was released that Russians did not like, but foreigners really liked.

What’s it called and what’s the plot about?

We are talking about an anime called “First Squad”. It is not entirely Russian: it was developed by the Japanese studio Studio 4 °C together with the Canadian Molot Entertainment and Russian scriptwriters.

Believe it or not, the story is not about superheroes, monsters or love, but about the Great Patriotic War. The action takes place in 1942: a detachment of pioneer heroes goes into battle with fascist occupiers who have risen from the afterlife.

At the same time, the pioneers themselves are not so simple. They are trained in the field of parapsychology and the occult, so now they are ready to defend their homeland on a front invisible to ordinary mortals. So there are still some superpowers here.

What do viewers say about the work?

In Russia, almost no one has heard of this anime. And those who heard it, criticized it fiercely. Many noted that it is simply boring in itself. And some viewers complained about a questionable move by the writers:

“Every 5 minutes there are talking heads giving serious interviews about the mystical department. At first it was funny, but then it started to get really annoying.”

But foreigners thought the picture was pretty good. Here’s what people on IMDb have to say about it:

“A very unusual way to talk about the war. The plot was well developed, so even I was interested, even though I am not a fan of anime at all,”

“This is a real masterpiece. An excellent story that will be interesting for residents of completely different countries,”

“Great voice acting, awesome sound effects, cool character design and animation, and a super exciting storyline.”
