Usually, remakes are a bad idea. And when we’re talking about iconic and holistic films like ‘Harry Potter’, this is a doubly bad idea. But in India, they don’t think so: in 2004, they filmed their take on JK Rowling’s story, but it turned out badly. You’ll definitely laugh at the title (or cry if you’re an avid Potter fan).
What’s wrong with the movie?
Actually, almost everything. Just look at the name of the picture – “Abracadabra”. But first things first. Unlike the original, the main character (his name is Shanu Singh, by the way) has no backstory. He simply enters the Abracadabra School of Wizards after winning a magic contest. There he learns the secrets of immortality and omnipotence, and at the same time tries to rescue his sorcerer father from captivity.
Instead of Voldemort, there is a beautiful headmistress who appears in almost every scene in new outfits. And the action itself takes place in a palace, which was drawn by interns rather than professionals. We will not comment on the graphics – just look at this flying head.

Of course, the film contains many references to the original. For example, in one scene Shanu talks to a watermelon, which cleverly transforms into a wizard – immediately triggering a flashback of how Minerva McGonagall changed from a cat to a human.
But they are still flowers. Do you want to try to guess what the authors replaced Quidditch with? Okay, don’t try, you still won’t succeed – with flying carpets (hello Aladdin fans). If that doesn’t bother you, what about the ghost of Casper, who somehow also turned out to be here? Well, the songs and dances were the icing on the cake. In general, if you are looking for a comedy, then here is a worthy candidate. Unfortunately, the film is not suitable for other genres.

How did the audience appreciate the Indian masterpiece?
Spoiler: bad. On IMDb it only got 2.8 points, and in reviews viewers called this movie “torture”.
“Every technical aspect of the film is so bad that it seems like even a layman could have done better if he had been given half a day to work on it.”
“If someone wants to commit suicide, just watch this movie”
“My God! What a horrible movie? Highly recommended, please don’t watch it.”
