The actress had to apologize, even though she wasn’t actually guilty of anything.

Unlike many of her peers, Anne Hathaway’s popularity came from her very first roles, of which she collected more than fifty over the 25 long years of her film career. And for only one role the actress reproaches herself to this day.

For years, the Interstellar star has remembered in horror the day she agreed to star in the 2020 film The Witches, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fairy tale. The film flopped at the box office, grossing less than $30 million on a budget twice that size, but for Hathaway the problem wasn’t the money.

In the story, the actress plays the Grand High Witch, an evil character with damage to her arms and legs that makes her appendages resemble claws. The reality, however, was that her arms simply looked like a limb deformity and reminded some of ectrodactyly.

British Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren, who suffers from this sad disease, was the first public figure to accuse the makers of the film and Anne herself of offensive depictions of people with disabilities almost immediately after its premiere. The wave of discontent among the population reached such a level that the filmmaker had to explain himself.

While Robert Zemeckis himself remained silent, Hathaway admitted her guilt on her social networks and tried to explain herself:

“I recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, suffer pain because of the image of the Great Supreme Witch. As someone who truly believes in inclusivity and truly hates cruelty, I owe you an apology for the pain this has caused. I’m sorry”.

And if Anne Hathaway was lucky and the filming of the supposedly scandalous movie did not affect her career in any way, then here are five of her colleagues who, due to careless words or actions, will probably never appear on the big screen.
