Martial arts legend Iko Uwais is back in action and, this time, the battle takes place inside a hospital. The raid AND Mile 22 The star will star in the upcoming action thriller magnetic resonance imaginga new film by the director Liam O’Donnellwho had previously collaborated with Uwais Beyond the horizon and the next one Horizon: Warpath.
MRI follows a troubled hitman with a broken family and a bruised knee who is undergoing a routine scan when the hospital is suddenly taken over by a ruthless gang.
Trapped in the middle of the chaos, he becomes the only one who can save their target, the daughter of a powerful crime boss, while battling excruciating pain and impossible odds. The screenplay is by Russell Hainline, known for Netflix’s Hot Frosty.
O’Donnell shared his excitement about working with Uwais again, saying, “Iko’s pure charisma, soulful depth and insane work ethic make him a director’s dream. After such a fantastic experience with Strong Island on ‘Alphas,’ I felt ‘MRI’ would be the perfect project for all of us to take things to the next level.”
The film is produced by Christopher Tuffin of Isola Forte (Freelance, Canary Black, Alpha) AND Ryan Santoso for Uwais Pictures. Daniel Baur’s K5 Intl. has acquired international sales rights and will launch the project at the American Film Market next month.
Tuffin described the film as a modern throwback to the golden age of martial arts cinema. “With the predominance of Asian-themed content on the market, we believe ‘MRI’ is a passionate throwback to the classic martial arts films of the 1970s, made for audiences born in the 2000s.”
In addition to starring roles in hits such as The raid 2 AND The night comes for usUwais has dedicated himself to producing and choreographing through his company Uwais Pictures and his stunt team, Uwais Team. Their debut production, Ikatan Darahopened Fantastic Fest to rave reviews, and Uwais will soon make his directorial debut Timurwhich will premiere in Indonesia on December 18.
Production of the MRI is expected to begin early next year in Jakarta.
