History could have taken a completely different direction after The Departed

Since 2000, when the Russian dubbing school finally gained strength and found its niche, Leonardo DiCaprio has been voiced by four actors, but the general public knows only Sergei Burunov. It’s very difficult to imagine the star of ‘The Revenant’ with someone else’s voice, but did Burunov really do it better than anyone else?

In the film ‘The Beach’, the then very young DiCaprio was dubbed by Vladimir Maslakov, who later voiced James Franco in ‘Spider-Man’ and Will Smith in ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’. There are no complaints about Maslakov’s dubbing – his Leo sounds young and stubborn, but later their paths diverged.

In DiCaprio’s next films, Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York, he was voiced by Anton Makarsky. Dubbing experts insist that the actor’s work turned out to be highly controversial, to say the least. It is not surprising that he never worked in this field again.

Sergei Burunov did not immediately become the official Russian voice of Leonardo, and even voiced him for the first time in ‘The Aviator’. Experts note that DiCaprio at that time simply “did not mature” in age compared to his foreign colleague. And already in “The Departed” the experienced Alexander Gavrilin spoke for Leo.

This action turned out to be a one-time event, but experienced film fans to this day note that Gavrilin did his job, if not better than Burunov, then at least at the same level.

But honestly, Burunov is also ideal for DiCaprio. The work of the star of “A Boy’s Word” on the voice acting of Leo is one of those rare cases when the Russian dubbing is superior to the original.
