It is impossible to imagine the cartoon without the actor who voiced the bogeyman.
DreamWorks faced intense opposition when they failed to cast Alexey Kolgan as the voice of Shrek. This story could have ended if we had never seen the legendary cartoon.
Dubbing director Yaroslava Turyleva, who received personal gratitude from Steven Spielberg for dubbing Schindler’s List, was very keen for her chosen actor to voice Shrek in the Russian version. When a response came from the United States saying they disagreed with her views, the woman wrote: “It will be Kolgan or I will not express this.” They had to agree, and our dub version was ultimately recognized as the best.
“I’m walking down the long corridor of Mosfilm, and from the far end of the corridor she shouts at me in a loud voice: ‘Kolgan, thanks to you I subjected all of Hollywood to cancer.’”, the artist shared his memories of working with Turyleva in an interview with Dmitry Cherevatenko.
