Around 90% of diabetic adults in the UK have type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person’s blood sugar to rise too high.
There are two main types of diabetes:
† Type 1where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells.
† Type 2when the body does not produce enough insulin or when the body’s cells do not respond to insulin.
Type 2 diabetes is much more common than type 1.
In the UK, around 90% of all adults with type 2 diabetes suffer from it.
Reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes can be achieved by following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and reaching a healthy body weight.
The main symptoms of diabetes are: being very thirsty, urinating more often (especially at night), feeling very tired, weight loss and loss of muscle mass.
