Josh Brolin Wanted to Be in BIRDMAN, Talks About Dropping Out and Being Replaced by Edward Norton

When you’ve had such a varied career as Josh Brolinyou will definitely have some regrets about the projects you turn down. The Goonies the alum has been open about his missteps before Jonah Hex a sore point remains, but a missed opportunity still lingers in his mind: turning down a role Alejandro G. Iñárrituis the 2014 film Birdman.

The Oscar-winning film, shot to look like one continuous take, was a career highlight for Michael Keaton. Brolin was not in the running for the lead role of Keaton, however, he was offered the part of Mike, the arrogant and unpredictable stage actor eventually played by Edward Norton.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin revealed: “I love that movie. It happens all the time, you know?” Although he admits there’s a little FOMO about jumping Birdmanhe is more than happy with how things went.

“But when I saw Edward in that role… it was perfect. It’s fantastic. I had read the table, and it was funny, and I withdrew because I went to visit my son in Thailand. I know why I withdrew and I wouldn’t have changed it today. But I would have loved to do that movie and I love Iñárritu. I think it’s fantastic.”

Brolin’s career has been dotted with major franchises, but not every role is meant to be. One he’s sure he doesn’t regret passing on is HBO Max’s upcoming DC Studios series Lanterns. At one point, Brolin was the favorite to play Green Lantern legend Hal Jordan, a role he will now have Kyle Chandler alongside Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

“I’m really excited to see it… I can’t wait to see it, because I love Kyle Chandler, I think he’s solid. He’s amazing.”

As for future roles in the comics, Brolin makes one thing clear: he would happily return to the MCU as the Mad Titan. “If they called me in London right now and said, ‘Let’s do this,’ I’d say, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow.’”

Whether or not he will have the chance to oppose Thanos Robert Downey Jr.In Doctor Doom, it’s clear that Brolin has no regrets about the choices that kept him close to his family, even if it meant losing an Oscar-winning classic.
