Tony sniffs and surprises: Aaron Sorkin, Nathan Lane, Laura Linney, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Oscar Isaac & Rachel Brosnahan among the big names who left empty-handed

Some of Broadway’s (and Hollywood’s) biggest names won’t be getting that congratulations today, as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations feature more than a few surprising — or in some cases, unsurprising — omissions.

Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was disliked by critics, didn’t get a Tony endorsement today. His revisions were extensive enough to qualify him for the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.

As for the leading actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan are the bold stars of The sign in Sidney Brustein’s windowwas also overlooked The piano lessons John David Washington and photos from homeis Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the award-winning Thick hamwas not nominated, and neither was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (life of pi). Jefferson Mays, so good in the season A Christmas songis not on the list.

Alongside Brosnahan, Broadway favorite Laura Linney was overlooked in the lead actress/play category as she Summer 1976 Medster Jessica Hecht has a nom.

Among the featured (ie supporting) cast members, some of the biggest surprises were the absence of the well-reviewed Danielle Brooks (The piano lesson), Sharon D Clarke (Death of a salesman), Michael Potts (The piano lesson) And Leopoldstadt David Krumholtz. Scott Foley, a big TV name, was not recognized for his appearance in The Thanksgiving Gameno big surprise given the so-so critical reception of the production.

Among the musical leads is the absence of three of Broadway’s most successful and popular names – Susan Stroman (New-York, New-York), Bartlett Sher (Camelot) and perhaps most Hamilton Director Thomas Kail (Sweeney Todd) – was one of the biggest shocks of the day. Nice to see Lear deBessonet recognized for his greatness In the forest, although the encores! Transfer was a lean affair back then Camelot, NY2 And Sweeney.

The Direction/Play had its own share of big-name disapproval, most notably LaTanya Richardson Jackson (The piano lesson), Kenny Leon (Top dog/under dog), Anne Kauffman (The sign in Sidney Brustein’s window) and Daniel Sullivan (Summer 1976). Justin Martin, who directed the award-winning film Big facewas also removed from the list.

In fact, big face, which was a major Olivier winner during its run in London, was not nominated in the Best Play category, nor in London life of pi or starring Sean Hayes Good night, Oscar. Not one death of a seller – another hit in London – yet Murders in the State of Ohio was held in the Play Revival category.

Two of the most anticipated shows of the season – Almost known And A beautiful sound – was excluded from the Best Musical category. Basically a Neil Diamond musical A beautiful sound received no nominations. The same goes for Andrew Lloyd Webber Evil Cinderella and and Dance by Bob Fosse.

There were a number of negative reactions in the lead actress/musical category: Anna Uzele (New-York, New-York), Müller patina (In the forest) and, perhaps quite unexpectedly, Phillipa Soo (Camelot). Soo’s co-star Andrew Burnap also left empty-handed.

Popular actor/musical, Gaten Matarazzo (Sweeney Todd), Gavin Creek (In the forest), Alex Joseph Grayson (march), Steve Boyer (Kimberly Akimbo) and Joshua Henry (In the forest) all ratings in sterling; no one was nominated.

As for the more pleasant surprises, peeled offthe little show, which had a great day and received a whopping nine nominations – more than Sweeney Todd, Into The Woods, Leopoldstadt, Parade and many productions that were much better known were on their way to their premieres. peeled off The producers were so confident in their show that they offered cheap tickets during the musical’s preview, hoping for news and maybe some Tony love. Apparently they have both.

Also heartwarming: is not a motherJordan E. Cooper’s unusual comedy about race and identity, which received rave reviews but struggled at the box office and was dropped early, is nominated for best play.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Corey Hawkins are dating Top dog/under dog was nominated, a good turn of events, as some feared the co-stars would cancel each other out. This is a situation that may have occurred Summer 1976with the deserving Jessica Hecht receiving a nomination but her equally deserving co-star Laura Linney not being recognized.

Other outstanding performance nominations that might have been overlooked — but thankfully weren’t — include Miriam Silverman (Sidney Breastin), Alex Newell (peeled off) and Julia Lester (In the forest).
