‘The Daily Show’ to Trevor Noah as he pays tribute – Contenders TV: Docs + Unscripted

The daily broadcast has had a busy six months after host Trevor Noah surprised everyone by announcing he was stepping down after seven years.

Noah’s last show was in December, and the Comedy Central series has shaken up the format with a rotating cast of guest hosts, including Chelsea Handler, Kal Penn and Sarah Silverman, as well as their own correspondents, including Roy Wood Jr. and Desi Lydic.

Showrunner Jen Flanz said during the show’s panel at Deadlines Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event that it’s been a fun ride. “It was really cool to see so many different voices given the agency’s authority,” she said. “It’s hard to think about what’s next. We don’t have time to be sad about Trevor [leaving], there is no time to think about the next step. We just live in it now.”

Wood added that he enjoyed his last time as host. “What I’ve learned the most, the biggest difference between a correspondent and a host, is that as a correspondent you have the freedom to be a bit of an agent of chaos and support a bigger story. But as a host you still have to be able to find the truth or the feeling or the emotion behind it.”

He also revealed that Noah occasionally drops by to watch the show and Wood teases him that it’s like watching your ex-girlfriend.

The trio agreed that Noah was a major influence on the franchise. Flanz said two things Noah is committed to are finding viewers where they are, especially online, and expanding content across platforms.

“I don’t think anyone saw it The daily broadcast Desk that was taken over by everyone when Trevor Jon Stewart took over,” she added. “He opens the way for the guests [hosts]so someone who is not Jon can take over the agency and he has done a very good job.

David Kibuuka, an executive producer and writer for the show, said it was sad to see Noah leave, but added that there is a “boost of energy” every week with new hosts. “Trevor said it was time to go, so we all see it as more of an opportunity. We’re having a good time – and he’s not dead.”
