rebel wilson she has a smile on her face despite being seriously tired and exhausted. She has just returned to the United States after a vacation in the Caribbean with her boyfriend, citrus branchand her 5 month old daughter Royce. “I’m a new mom too,” says Rebel. hollywood life when discussing her partnership with Abbott and the Brain Injury Association of America on the Concussion Awareness Now campaign, “so sometimes I think I’m having a brain fog or something because there’s so many things to think about right now that i never needed to think before . .

The new world that Rebel lives in is a world with many dangers, dangers and potential threats to his melon. “Do you know how protective I am of my daughter?” asks the actress and comedy star. “She has just learned to turn around and we are so protective that someone has to watch her at all times. I’m paranoid. Mothers tell stories about their babies falling off the changing table or falling out of bed or something and hitting their head. And we literally said, ‘My God, nice brain!’”

These concerns echo those raised by Rebel with his PSA about concussion now and how every blow and bump could be something more serious. But as every new mom discovers, Rebel knows she can’t baby-proof the world. “I know an accident can always happen, but Ramona and I are very careful. [cautious]”, he tells HL. “One of us literally has to be on hand at any time. I think when he’s your first child, you’re probably more like that.”

“I’m someone who never prioritized my health or my mental health, probably until a few years ago,” she adds. “And now, being a mom, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I should have treated myself more like I treat my little newborn.’ But it’s all a learning experience. But yeah, damn it, we’re so protective of her and her little head, her little head growing up. We are probably too protective.

The Rebels’ involvement with Concussion Awareness Now, a coalition of nearly 20 advocacy groups founded by Abbott and the Brain Injury Association of America, comes nearly five years after he suffered a concussion while filming Isn’t that romantic? “I slipped down a grassy hill,” she says. “He wasn’t even that steep; he had the dew. And I was walking to the set and I slipped and I was like, ‘This is so common. My poor mom fell off a garage door on her head and suffered a concussion, which is a little more dramatic, but simple things like little slips and falls can cause concussions, and then you don’t know the damage what have you done. And I would like to know.

“At least I went to the hospital. An ambulance took me because I lost consciousness. And I thought, ‘Oh God, this is serious.’ But then I felt the pressure to get back to work. So I went back and worked 16 hour days. If I had known, from association with Abbott and the Brain Injury Association, what I know now, I should have rested,” Rebel explains. okay, went back to work and worked 16 hour days and worked the next few days.

And I was supposed to rest and relax. But what amazes me is that most people don’t even get tested, which is crazy when the brain is such an important part of the body.”

“[Concussions are] so common,” says Rebel. “And then over half of concussions never get checked out, which is crazy because to me! I think your brain is your most important asset, really. And the fact that if you get it right and never check it, that’s crazy. And then my concussion story: I’d always associate concussions with elite athletes like NFL players, or see football players banging their heads. [the ball] and that sort of thing. But the most common concussions come from everyday things.”

Concussion Awareness Now posted its first PSA with Rebel in February, two months after posting a conversation between the Last year star and dr. beth mcquiston, neurologist and chief medical officer of Abbott. Soon after, the campaign introduced The Melons, a CGI family of melon-headed characters, as a way to show how easy it is to damage your brain. From falling, hitting your head on furniture, or even colliding with another person, the new line of PSAs aims to raise awareness of how easy it is to get a concussion.

Rebel had previously shared her concussion story on talk shows, so she was approached by Abbott and the Brain Injury Association of America to be the spokesperson for the Concussion Awareness Now campaign.

“It was a great collaboration,” says Rebel HL We shot my first PSA for the campaign on a Universal lot. It was so much fun. You always think, “Oh, that’s like a sketch or something,” instead of a PSA, because that was so much fun to do. And then talking to Dr. Beth that day: She’s an expert on brain health and concussions and she just found out? I really enjoyed working with them.”

“I thought it was a really good PSA, and I really like what they’re doing with The Melons in explaining [concussion]Rebel added. “I think it works on all levels. And I also have such a young fan base. So specifically I thought it would work well.

Probably Rebel’s youngest fan is her five-month-old daughter, who caused a huge change in her life. When asked if she’s changed her lifestyle since working with Concussion Awareness Now, Rebel says she’s not used to doing a lot of “bad things,” especially since she underwent a significant change in 2020. “I have reframed my life,” she says HL, “and focused on my health and my mental health. Why has my mental health affected my physical health; in reality, everything is connected.

In 2017, on the set of not romanticI didn’t have the heart to say, ‘Oh no, wait, there’s something wrong with me and so I should have the day off,’” she continues. “But now, and being part of this campaign, if I hit my head, I would have the courage to say, ‘No guys, this is very serious. I know I don’t have a big bruise on my head or anything, but if I hit the brain, even if it’s an invisible wound, you can’t see it. I would have the courage to say: ‘No, I will prioritize myself’”.

“Whereas I really wouldn’t have done that a few years ago,” he concludes. “I’d say, ‘Oh, give me some steroids and let’s get to work.’ Now, I know that nothing is worth this. Your physical and mental well-being is more important than shooting another day. And I think that’s a good lesson for me. I felt guilty or something for prioritizing myself before, and now I’m like, ‘no, it’s okay, I need to rest or I need to take care of myself.'”
