Cancelled: This follows the broadcaster canceling the medical drama after just one series due to insufficient ratings
Parminder reshared social media posts from fans who claimed they “love” Maternal and are “disappointed” it won’t be returning.
They wrote: “@ITV why did you cut #Maternal? It’s such a great show, I loved it and was hoping series 2 would have more episodes. Big mistake, let’s hope another channel picks it up and make it bigger and even better!’
“Was a really stupid decision by ITV. BBC always dominate Jan and Feb with their dramas as you said. Mums stood no chance against DIP, Call the Midwife, Happy Valley and Silent Witness.”
Sad to hear that. I thought how well #Maternal was written to reflect the realities of doctors and nurses’ lives. Juggling life and work. The 3 main characters were endearing and compelling to watch. Maybe it was too realistic. Hope @ITV will reconsider.”
“Disappointed that @ITV is not renewing drama #Maternal for a second series! I really loved the first one!’
“Why is @ITV canceling every decent show I loved motherly!!”
Lucy Mangan of The Guardian gave the first episode four out of five stars, praising the depth of the three main characters and noting that “there were grains in the narrative oyster that yielded something wonderful”.
While The Telegraph’s Anita Singh also gave it four stars out of five and stated that it was better than recent medical drama This Is Going To Hurt.

Speaking about working on the series in January, Parminder explained that her experience on the US series ER helped her prepare for the role.
She said: “I felt there was still a bit of medicine in it, even technically, how to disguise things on camera.
“For example, if you’re intubating a patient (putting a tube through a person’s mouth or nose and into their windpipe), you hold your hand in a certain way to hide that you’re not actually doing it .
The funniest thing was being told some of the terminology I used to say in the ER: “That’s not how they say it here.” It’s pronounced differently in Britain.’
Parminder also revealed that she is playing the role of pediatrician Dr. Maryam Afridi came through her real best friend Lara.
She explained: “Lara Pulver and I are best friends and neighbors in LA.
“We did a lot of our audition tapes together during the pandemic. So when she auditioned for the role of Catherine in Maternal, I read the opposite roles.
“The next day I got an email asking me to audition as Maryam. So we took all our gear and junk to Liverpool to film as a small family.
“Having the opportunity to work with Lara, who I love and respect, is just amazing.”
