Questlove Directs Live-Action Remake of Disney Classic Aristocats – 53 Years After Animated Film Debut

Questlove will direct Disney’s live-action/hybrid reimagining of The Aristocats.

The founding member of the group The Roots – real name Ahmir Thompson – won the Oscar for best documentary last year for Summer of Soul.

The Aristocats will be the Grammy winner’s directorial debut, and he will also produce and direct the music for the film, according to Deadline.

The new film is based on the 1970 Disney animated film about Duchess, a Persian cat and her kittens Marie, Berlioz and Toulouse who are about to inherit their owner’s fortune.

The greedy butler intervenes and sends the cats into the country, where they meet charming street cat Thomas O’Malley.

The Persian Cats get an education on life on the streets from Thomas O’Malley and his friends as they head back to town to reclaim their home before it’s too late.

Questloves Two One Five Entertainment will produce the script, written by Will Gluck and Keith Bunin, along with Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman.

Questlove told Variety: “I’ll give the spoiler warning. Will Smith was part of the celebrations tonight, but they started filming Bad Boys 4 this week.

“There was a lot of pre-recording he had to do, so we had to get rid of Will.”

And while Questlove was at the 2022 Oscars — he completely missed Smith to beat Rock — even though his award was the only one presented by Rock.

The Roots drummer said he was practicing Transcendental Meditation when his lineup was announced, and that’s when the incident between Smith and Rock occurred.

“It’s weird to say because they tell you beforehand, ‘It’s your category’, so at this point you’re either going to be full of anxiety or, for me, I’ve been meditating for the last two years. years,” he said.

“When the commercial break happened I was just meditating and when I opened my eyes I didn’t realize – why is everyone so quiet? For example, I was literally not present in that entire moment.

He continued, “But in my mind they’re just doing a skit or whatever and I was like, ‘OK, Ahmir, don’t forget to thank your mom, your dad, so I wasn’t there at all, I was just in an empty space.’

Questlove said that when he “walked on stage,” he “put two and two together and realized there was a real moment” between Smith and Rock before he gave his acceptance speech.
