Australian Idol star Matt Corby slams musicians starting careers on TikTok: ‘It needs to be backed by hard work and craftsmanship’

Matt Corby has criticized musicians who started their careers on TikTok despite starting out in the industry by performing on Australian Idol in 2007.

The social media app has boosted the careers of many singers, including Olivia Roderigo, who was previously known for her roles on Disney Channel but had several hit singles from her debut album after going viral on TikTok.

Along with many new artists making their debut on the video-sharing app, Miley Cyrus also topped the charts for her new single Flowers after it was a huge hit on the social media platform.

Despite the proven success musicians are enjoying thanks to the popular app, Matt doesn’t think it’s a sustainable way for artists to launch their careers.

The ARIA-winning singer told NCA NewsWire that being viral is “ephemeral” and that a successful music career needs to be backed up by “hard work and skill.”

He added that a small viral snippet of a song cannot give listeners a good overview of the song.

“Would you like to see a show of this? They don’t know yet, there isn’t much trust between the player and the musician,” he said.

“You don’t really get an experience of an artist editing a video of them singing a song.

“It’s a great opportunity for a record company to find maybe 1 in 1000 talent, which is pretty cool.

“But then there’s still so much hard work to do to develop this artist and connect him with the right people and put out the right records and get them lined up and get them to play shows.”

However, the indie rocker – who was just 16 when he finished second on Australian Idol – admitted he would find it very difficult to launch a music career now.

He told the Daily Telegraph that in 2023 there is “so much saturation” with music that it is very difficult to cut through all that noise.

“No one can hear all this music,” he said. “It’s a completely different landscape than it was 15 years ago when I started.”
