“The Afterparty” composer Daniel Pemberton created 10 different themes for the Apple TV + multi-genre show: sound and screen

Daniel Pemberton composed the music for the film Phil Lord and Chris Miller Spider-Man: In the verse of the spider. Then Lord and Miller hired them for the Apple TV + series more partyBut the job was exponentially more difficult.

“There are 10 different movie genres in this show,” Pemberton said during a panel discussion at the Deadline’s Sound & Screen Awards season concert event. “It’s like an action movie, it’s a comedy, it’s a thriller, it’s a David Lynch work of art, it’s an animation.”

Pemberton said the Roman comedy and thriller soundtracks were orchestral and conducted them live for a Sound & Screen audience at UCLA’s Roy Hall. Ike Barinholtz’s character Brett tells the story of him as an action movie that required a different sound.

“Chris went more to the aesthetics of John Vick,” Pemberton said. “So I thought, well, we’ll do it that way. So it’s like a rock guitar and more like a band. “

Pemberton’s case was further complicated when he learned of other musical lines in the film. The murder victim, Xavier (Dave Franco), starred in a live action movie Hungry Hungry Hippos, of which we see the clip.

“I did this little thing that says do do do do do do do, hungry hippos,” said Pemberton. “It’s only two seconds and it’s like a two second traffic jam.”

Pemberton said he also had to write the original style for Hall and Oates and all the songs for the Jasper (Ben Schwartz) musical episode.

“I’ve always enjoyed trying to make music that isn’t what you expect it to be,” said Pemberton. “But in this case, when I was making genre films, I had to do exactly what you hoped it would sell.”
